Sergeant Christina E. Smith, of Mt. Orab, was stabbed to death as she walked with her husband near their Fayetteville, N.C. home.
The attack came around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night.
Smith, whose maiden name was Loehrke, died Tuesday night after the stabbing.
"The husband stated that he somehow turned back and his wife was being attacked with a knife and he ran back and the suspect ran away," said Theresa Chance, a spokesperson for the Fayetteville Police Department.
Smith, who graduated from Western-Brown High School in 1997, was the valedictorian of her class.
"Just very intelligent, common sense type of person," said Assistant Principal Tim Cook.
Cook taught Smith physical education.
"Really big in band, she was a really good trumpet player," Cook added.
Smith was also a graduate of Xavier University.
9News visited the Loehrke home Thursday night but Steven, Christina's father, declined to comment.
Fayetteville police interviewed Smith's husband Richard D. Smith Thursday night. He left the station accompanied by his parents.
Police have not said whether they have a suspect in the case or if they consider him a suspect.
