CINCINNATI -- Fire officials say they responded to a house fire early Sunday morning that a man tried to put out himself first.

The fire happened at 3525 Rawson Place in Oakley.

Firefighters were called to the scene and determined that the fire was in the basement.

Officials say they had the fire under control within ten minutes.

No one was injured as a result of the fire and damages are estimated at $15,000.

The resident of the house attempted to put the fire out himself, which could have made the fire much worse because he did not call the fire department for proper help.

Fire Chief Michael Washington stressed that the public should always call 911 and get out of the structure immediately when there is a fire.

Washington said to never try to put out a fire yourself and do not go back in the building.
