NEW YORK (AP) -- The voice of our trustworthy uncle has been replaced by the voice of God. CBS has retired Walter Cronkite's recorded intro to the CBS Evening News and is now using Morgan Freeman.
Cronkite recorded the introduction when Katie Couric started at CBS in 2006. Cronkite's voice was kept on the air even after his death July 17.
The head of CBS news says "as comforting as it is to look back on the great career that Walter had, we're looking forward now and we just felt it was the right time to make the move that at some point had to be made." And, he says having Freeman do the intros gives CBS the flexibility to record different ones when Couric has special reports and is on location.
CBS had been doing that, but with a different voice and then would go back to Cronkite's voice when it was a regular newscast.
