COVINGTON, Ky. -- The Emergency Cold Shelter of Northern Kentucky is open during evening and overnight hours for people who need a break from the freezing temperatures.
The shelter is located at
634 Scott Boulevard in Covington.
Volunteers provide an evening meal and coffee.
The doors are open from 8 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Friday through Sunday.
"Our guests come in and we provide a movie on TV and a cup of coffee and a bag dinner and all of those things are provided by volunteers and support from our community," said Rachel Winters, Operations Manager of the Emergency Cold Shelter.
Emergency room doctors at St. Elizabeth Medical Center warn it doesn't take long for frostbite to set in when it comes to exposed skin.
For some, the freezing temperatures bring other medical problems.
"This cold is a stress on your system and we will see patients with an exacerbation of medical symptoms like emphysema, heart disease, congestive heart failure. We are seeing a lot of patients with those conditions today," said Dr. Daniel Brunner of St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
