WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) - U.S. Forest Service officials are increasing efforts to protect biological and cultural resources at a popular outdoor destination in the Daniel Boone National Forest in eastern Kentucky.

The Red River Gorge attracts campers, hikers and climbers to its unique rock formations. But Forest Service officials say that camping in sensitive areas, including along cliff lines and under rock overhangs, is prohibited and can damage sensitive plants and archaeological sites.

In the Daniel Boone Forest, camping and fire-building are prohibited within 100 feet of the base of a cliff or rock overhang.

A statement from the Forest Service says officers handed out 33 violation notices and four written warnings last weekend.
