Pipe Bomb Found In Mt. Washington

Last Update: 6/24 1:01 am
The Cincinnati Bomb Squad removed an explosive device from a Mount Washington apartment complex Tuesday night.

Residents at the Mantara Apartments in the 2300 block of Beechmont Avenue say they're relieved that their maintenance man found the pipe bomb that was sitting behind a dumpster – before a child did.

"That's a scary thing, for sure, it's very scary" said Michito Kit, who lives in the apartment building.

"We have children in the building and residents, if we would've just walked down and dumped our trash and it would've blew up or something,” said Kit. “You know, it just would've been over. I'm glad everybody's all right."

Danny Magnuson says he was picking up trash when he picked-up the bomb.

"I came here to cut the grass. I always walk around and pick up the paper first,” said Magnuson. “I went around the dumpster and seen this thing and reached down and picked it up and was getting ready to throw it in the dumpster –  and I realized it was a homemade pipe bomb."

Magnuson says he quickly put the bomb in a fire box he has in his trunk; closed the trunk –  and called 911.

The bomb squad responded and blew up the device.

No one was hurt.

Residents now want to know who would play with a pipe bomb, and then leave it behind.

"With the kids playing back there, cutting through, if I would have left it, not knowing -- and one of the kids grabbed it and dropped it – Lord knows what could've happened" said Magnuson.

The Cincinnati Fire Department strongly advises anyone who finds a suspicious device to leave it alone, clear the area, then call the fire department.
