INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A state panel has approved revamped teacher licensing rules that Indiana's schools chief says will spur future teachers to spend more time learning subject matter and less time taking education classes.
The Division of Professional Standards Advisory Board on Wednesday approved the proposal, which drew opposition from universities and others who said state Superintendent Tony Bennett shouldn't dictate a teacher's college curriculum.
Bennett says the new rules will improve teacher quality by requiring a focus on subject matter.
For example, college students who want to become high school math teachers can now major in education and take classes in math.
The new rules require future teachers to major in a subject such as math and minor in education.
The rules go into effect July 31.
