CINCINNATI -- The safety of hundreds of thousands of school children in the Tri-State is considered each and every time it snows.
Cincinnati Public Schools chief operations officer Terry Elfers explains that the school district is in communication with the city and other agencies to make the right decision.
Some districts elect to delay the start of school to buy themselves time to see whether the snow accumulation will be significant.
Elfers, however, says that CPS tries not to do that.
"The reason being is that it takes people out of their schedule," said Elfers. “Parents understand the normal beginning and end of day schedule. If we delay, well now the parents have a problem.”
Elfers says sometimes parents mistakenly believe that decisions to close come from teachers or unions whose members don't want to go in to work.
He says that isn't true and that the safety of the district's students is always the driving force of any decision to close school.
