WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sonia Sotomayor is poised to make history as the Supreme Court's first Hispanic justice.
The Senate is expected to vote this afternoon to confirm President Barack Obama's first pick for the high court. She has more than enough votes to be confirmed, barring a surprise turn of events.
Sotomayor has picked up more GOP support. But nearly three-quarters of the Senate's 40 Republicans have said they would vote "no." They argue that Sotomayor would bring liberal bias and personal sympathies to her decisions.
Obama named Sotomayor to replace retiring Justice David Souter, a liberal named by a Republican president, George H.W. Bush. She is not expected to alter the court's ideological balance.
