Good Morning...It's Wednesday October 21, 2009

You know it's a dull Tuesday when you turn on ESPN at 10 and it's showing the World Series of Poker.  You flip to ESPN2 and they're showing "The NFL's Greatest Games."

HE'S WORTH IT
Tonight showed that whatever the Yankees paid for CC Sabathia, he's worth every cent.  The Yanks lost an extra innings game on Monday.  Tonight, CC calmly took the mound in Anaheim and baffled the Angels for 8 innings.  The Yankees beat the Angels 10-1 to take a 3-1 lead in the ALCS.

THEY HELPED
Melky Cabrera singled in two runs in the fourth inning, when the Yanks scored three times.  A-Rod hit another home run in the sixth.  Johnny Damon made it a runaway with a home run in the eighth.

THE QB QUESTION
As Dennis Janson suspected on Monday, Tony Pike's appearance at practice Monday didn't mean Pike wasn't going to have surgery on that injured left arm.  He did have surgery(or a "procedure" as the press release described it.) Apparently the plate that was placed inside his left arm a year ago was affected in the South Florida game last week. That had to be repaired.

SO WHAT'S NEXT?
Kelly says Pike won't practice again until Thursday.  "We'll find a way to get Tony involved" said BK at his weekly news gathering.  They'll see if Tony can take snaps in the shotgun and if he can defend himself.

NEXT MAN IN
Kelly says Chazz Anderson and Zach Collaros will split the reps in practice this week at quarterback.  More from Kelly, "Chazz is 2-0 as a starter, Zach hasn't started a game yet.  Both those guys can win Big East games because they have."

MY 2 CENTS..THO NOBODY ASKED FOR IT
Start Anderson or Collaros and use Pike only in a dire emergency. Why would you risk injuring Pike for the long term, if you can win with other guys in the short term?  Kelly is very cunning and I think he wants the next two opponents, Louisville and Syracuse to keep guessing. Why not?

THEY'RE NOTICING
The Pike injury update was a regular entry on ESPN's annoying ticker on the bottom of the screen.  That shows the Cats are relevant.  Years ago, if the story was run, they would have misspelled Cincinnati....like Cincinnatti.  I've seen that a lot.

SATURDAY ON CHANNEL 9
The College slate for this Saturday
3:30  Penn State and Michigan
8:00  Texas and Missouri

HELP ME MARVIN
Defensive Tackle Orien Harris has made his way back to Cincinnati.  He made 24 tackles for the Bengals a year ago. Then he was traded to St. Louis for Brian Leonard.  He was then dealt to Detroit and waived in early September.  The Bengals signed him as a free agent. He replaces Antwan Odom on the roster.

MEANINGFUL
I think this game with Chicago means a lot....at least as much as any game the Bengals have played this season. The Bengals have something to prove after their uninspiring performance against the Texans.  Sunday made us all a lot more skeptical.  Certainly the Bengals don't want to go to the bye week with a loss.  And considering that they have to come back from the bye to face Baltimore and Pittsburgh in back-to-back weeks, a Sunday win is crucial.

DA BEARS
Chicago has signed quarterback Jay Cutler to a two year extension through 2013

IT HAPPENED ON THIS DATE
October 21, 1975, the Reds and Red Sox played Game Six of the World Series, the game against which all other world series game are measured.  So many memories. Freddie Lynn crashing into the wall. George Foster throws out Denny Doyle at the plate in the ninth.  Dewey Evans went to the wall and picked off a Joe Morgan drive in the eleventh.  Then of course, Carlton Fisk's winning home run in the 12th.  Often forgotten is the three run home run by Bernie Carbo in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game. None of the other heroics happen without Carbo's home run.

WEDNESDAY'S QUIZ
When Fisk hit the winning home run in the 12th inning, what song did the organist play at Fenway Park.

IT ALSO HAPPENED ON THIS DATE
October 21, 1976, the Reds finish a four game sweep of the New York Yankees in the World Series.

BIRTHDAYS
Joyce Randolph is 85.  She was Trixie Norton on "The Honeymooners."  Manfred Mann is 69. "There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin' Do Wah Diddy Diddy dum diddy do."  They don't write songs like that anymore.

TONIGHT
Game Five of the NLCS between the Dodgers and Phils.  Philly leads it 3-1

WEDNESDAY'S QUIZ-THE ANSWER
The organist at Fenway broke into Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus"
