Vernon Manor To Close By End Of Month

Last Update: 3/14 2:17 am

A landmark and a piece of Cincinnati history will soon be gone.

The Vernon Manor Hotel on Oak Street in Avondale is the latest victim of this rocky economy.

For more than 80 years guests, both famous and not so famous, have stayed at the Vernon Manor.

In just a few weeks the historic hotel will close.

"I'm really disappointed, because it's just such a great place," said Cincinnati city council member David Crowley.

Crowley says the Vernon Manor Hotel is something he fears he'll never see again.

"A guy my age who kind of grew up around this kind of stuff and always knew it was there and always figured it would be there," said Crowley. "And it would always be kind of classy and special."

But, it won't always be there.

Management says the historic Vernon Manor Hotel will be closing by the end of the month.

Built in 1924, the Vernon Manor has been the hotel of choice for a long list of famous guests including the Beatles, Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson as well as countless athletes and celebrities.

Management says the closing is a direct result of the economy.

Many in the area say they expected it.

"It's not surprising, and what worries me is that there's going to be more things like this going on," said Michelle MetCalf.

"Yeah, you know, that is going to knock some people out of a job," said Jimmy Tarver. "Way things are going now, everybody needs a job."

According to management, more than 100 employees will lose their jobs.

"We'll get a chance tonight to have fun, experience it, check out the overlook, see the city, but a lot of people won't," said Ben Vanoudenallen.

"And I know it's a historic place. It's like a little hidden jewel. It's kind of a hub where celebrities have come to town. We're going to be said to see it go," Vanoudenallen said.

Management says they will call each and every person who has an event planned at the Vernon Manor past the end of the month to try to work something out.
