Ways To Build Your Own Brand

Last Update: 9/16/2009 9:54 pm
Finding a job can be tough work. The newest way to get your name out there may be right at your fingertips.

And we're not talking about social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.

After years in the high paced world of advertising, Will Lindow decided to change directions.

"I knew that I needed to record music, play music," says Lindow.

Will wanted to re-invent himself and a paper resume just wouldn't cut it.

So, he built willlindow.com and packed it with things like an in-depth bio, pictures and snippets of his music.

"Anybody can be on LinkedIn and anybody can be on Facebook,” he says. “But, if you can create this other medium – it's a little bit, you know – more elaborate."

Will isn't the only one building and browsing. Why? Personal web sites help enhance your personal "brand."

"It gives you an advantage over your competition. You can create an image, a messaging, that your competition may not be able to create." says Bob Kustka, a workplace productivity expert.

It's also a way for employers to access your info at lightning speed.

According to Cnet.com, there are several do-it-yourself programs available online from companies wanting to host your site.

Many of them are free if you don't mind a few advertisements, or you can pay a small monthly fee.

Wix.com is one such site. CEO Allon Bloch explains how it works.

"You simply drag and drop elements into the editing environment and once you've created your own Web site, you simply go and publish it," says Bloch.

Experts say getting creative will help you grab attention. But, before you start, think about your target audience. Design something that will be attractive to them.

"You want to make sure that what you have up there isn't just what you like,” says Kutska. “That the imagery you're putting on, the use of the language, the graphics, are going to have a positive impact on your prospective employer."

It's important to have friends and family check your site thoroughly before it's published. Have them check to make sure that any language posted won't be taken out of context.

Then enlist their help in spreading the news about your new web site.
