Don't Forget The Cole Crops

Another group of plants that you will want to have in your early garden is cole crops.  Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kohlrabi are different types of cole crops.

Cole is a German word that means cabbage and is where the word cole slaw originates.  An easy way to remember when to plant cole crops is that the word sounds similar to cold.

Just remember to rotate the area that you plant cole crops in each year and growing season.  The insects and diseases remain in the soil and can affect any cole plants planted there during the next growing season.

It's not too early to start planning for your warm season crops.  Now is the time to start your seeds indoors for tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons and pumpkins.

Tomatoes are the most popular vegetable grown in home gardens and soon it will be time to plant those in your garden too.  As the weather warms, check back for an update on when you can start planting your warm-season crops.

Be sure to let your garden dry out before you till or plant your garden.

Tilling muddy soil will damage the soil structure and leave you with large unworkable clumps.  The perfect soil will be crumbly to the touch but form a ball in your hand.
