Is your garden soil healthy?  One way to find out is by digging for earthworms.

The best time to check is during spring.  You can do this simply by digging up a one foot square area of soil.

If you find less than 10 earthworms in this square foot , it's time to add more organic material to your garden.  Ten or more earthworms means that your soil is fertile.

If your soil needs more organic material, there are a few things that you can add:  animal manures that have aged 30 days, plant manures, compost and mixed organic fertilizer.

Your garden or flower bed will benefit not only with the increase in earthworms, but from the slow release of nutrients into the soil.

This organic material allows the microbiological activity of the soil to be supported and improves the ability of the soil to hold water and nutrients.

By using organic material, you are reducing organic waste products and enjoying the benefits of a healthier garden or flower bed.
