May - July '09 Temps Forecast (NWS Climate Prediction Center)

Temperatures climbed into the 80's for the first time this year on April 24 with a high of 84F.  As we approach early May highs average near 70F.

The monthly forecast model for May is showing the tri-state with near normal precipitation and temperatures.  It will be above normal in parts of Texas and New Mexico and cooler than normal across Minneosota, the Dakotas, Iowa and Pacific Northwest coastline.

Extreme drought conditions across southern Texas and southern Florida will start to improve in the long range forecast with near normal precipitation expected.

The drier than normal weather shifts into Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and western  Colorado intensifying drought conditions across parts of this region.  Above normal precipitation will occur in Minneosota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

May 2008 was an unusually cool month for our area.  We averaged 3 degrees cooler overall for the month for both the high and low temperatures.

During May, we typically see 4.59" of rain in the tri-state.  Highs for the month average 74.4F and lows average 52.9F.

There is not much difference in the monthly forecast for our area and the 90 day long range forecast.  We are once again expecting near normal temperatures and precipitation.

Texas and New Mexico will still see above normal temperatures that will spread further across these two states.  Cooler temps will continue to prevail across Minneosota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and the Pacific Northwest coastline.

The drought will intensify across Nevada, Oregon and parts of California as the drier than normal conditions spread from Washington, Oregon and northern California through Wyoming and Colorado.

There is some change in our long range forecast when you look at the first week in May on the 8-14 Day Forecast Valid May 2-9.  Temperatures are expected to be above normal as well as precipitation.

Our string of 80 degree days may not be done yet.  Look for some additional wet weather in early May before our weather returns to a more normal forecast.
