BURLINGTON, Ky. - The Boone County Sheriff's office has arrested a man in connection to a string of break-ins in Burlington.
The department says it had been investigating numerous car break-ins around the 5600 block of Idlewild Road over the past couple of weeks. When the occupants of the vehicles left to exercise in the park, the thief would break a window out of the car and steal their valuables, usually purses. Then Tuesday morning around 10:30 a.m., police say bike patrols lay in wait as Alan Ashley broke into a woman's car.
Ashley is now at the Boone County Jail, held on $7,000 bond. Officials say additional charges from the previous thefts are expected.
To deter break-ins, Sheriff Michael A. Helmig has some advice.
"We've seen an increase in these types of opportunistic thefts where valuables are often left in plain view. I strongly urge the occupants of vehicles to either remove valuables or, at the very least, conceal them from view."
