PETERSBURG, Ky. - A rescue team was called to the Ohio River Tuesday afternoon just after 3 p.m. when a man on a boat jumped into the river, but did not resurface.

The unidentified Petersburg, Ky., man, 48, was suppose to be fishing with his brother-in-law on the Ohio River. He has been missing since late afternoon, said Tom Scheben, spokesman with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.

The missing man’s brother-in-law said that they went to the Ohio River to go fishing up near an Interstate 275 bridge, about a quarter of a mile away from the boat ramp. They had their poles and fishing gear in the boat, but never fished. At some point he said, he handed his watch to him, jumped into the water and did not resurface.

At this time, it is not clear why he jumped into the water.

That is when the missing man’s brother-in-law went to shore to call for help.

The water rescue team onsite is using a side scan sonar and underwater cameras to locate the man.

Names of those involved have not been released.
