LEXINGTON, Ky. - Police say the driver of a car that plowed into a Lexington restaurant after hours went into the eatery and stole several cartons of cigarettes.

Authorities were called to Sarah's Corner Cafe around 3 a.m. Monday morning, but the car was gone. WKYT-TV reports the front of the building was severely damaged.

Police say the crash appeared to be an attempt to get into the building.

The building's owner, Ralph Egbert, wondered why a criminal would do damage to a car just to steal 10 or 15 cartons of cigarettes. He says the restaurant would be closed for about a week.
