ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. - A 28-year-old baby sitter has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder in the death of a toddler in her care.

Ashley Nicole Chapman of Vine Grove entered the plea Tuesday morning in Hardin County Circuit Court in Elizabethtown. She is being held in the Hardin County Detention Center on $500,000 cash bond, WAVE-TV reported.

Kentucky State Police say Chapman struck and shook Layla Johnson, causing her to lose consciousness and sustain extensive bruising and bleeding in the brain.

State police say the child's grandmother picked her up Wednesday and immediately took her to Hardin Memorial Hospital. Police said Sunday the girl had died.
