Mother sentenced in death of daughter

STANTON, Ky. - An eastern Kentucky mother has been sentenced to three years in prison in the death of her toddler daughter.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Jessica Charles, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to reckless homicide in the 2010 death of her 22-month-old daughter, received a three-year sentence on Wednesday.

Charles was originally charged with murder in the death of Danika Charles, whose cause of death was blunt force trauma to her head, chest, abdomen, legs and arms. Powell County prosecutor Darrell Herald said Jessica Charles acknowledged that her child was harmed because she "put the child in a position where the child could be harmed."

Herald says Charles will get credit for the more than 800 days she has served in jail or one home detention.
