LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Police say an adult was killed and more than a dozen children were taken to a hospital after a van hit a tree southwest of downtown Louisville.

Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley says the van believed to be carrying children from a day care swerved for an unknown reason and wrecked shortly after 5 p.m. EDT Tuesday.

Smiley says the van was carrying two adults and 13 children ages 3 or 4 to 9 or 10. She says the adults were taken to University Hospital, where one was pronounced dead. The names haven't been released.

Kosair Children's Hospital chief nursing officer Cis Gruebbel says 14 children were brought there and were still being assessed.

Officers expected to have Algonquin Parkway closed for a time.
