LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Kentucky soldier who is depicted in the photograph of the American flag being raised at Iwo Jima during World War II is celebrated in a new book being released next week.

Marine Pfc. Franklin R. Sousley was born in Hilltop in Fleming County. Acclaim Press, which is publishing the book by Kentucky author Ron Elliott of Bardstown, says Sousley landed on Iwo Jima in 1945 and participated in the battle.

He was killed in combat and is now buried in Elizaville Cemetery in Fleming County.

Elliott's book is scheduled for release on Veterans Day. Former Kentucky first lady Heather French Henry, who has championed veterans rights, wrote the book's foreword.
