Two enter pleas in attempt to bribe prosecutor

SOMERSET, Ky. - Two Somerset residents have been sentenced in connection with a plan to try to bribe a prosecutor.

Attorney General Jack Conway's office prosecuted the case because the local prosecutor was a witness. Conway's office said 46-year-old Dormus "Bubby" Dalton and 45-year-old Virginia "Carol" Hampton entered pleas Wednesday in Pulaski County Circuit Court.

Dalton pleaded guilty to one count of complicity to bribery of a public servant and being a persistent felony offender and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Hampton entered an "Alford plea," meaning she acknowledged sufficient evidence for a jury to convict her, to a charge of facilitation to bribery of a public servant, and will serve two years' probation.

Conway's office says the scheme involved trying to bribe Commonwealth's Attorney Eddy Montgomery to release Hampton's son, who was convicted of narcotics trafficking. Montgomery notified police and assisted in the investigation.
