Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the backyard

BEREA, Ky. - Residents of this town of 14,749 can now apply to keep chickens in their backyards without worrying about neighbors crying fowl.

The Berea City Council amended an ordinance allowing someone to keep up to six hens, but no roosters, on a residential property with a permit. The new measure, put in place Tuesday, replaces an old ordinance that allowed neighbors whose feathers were ruffled to file complaints with the city to have permits denied or revoked.

The Richmond Register reported that applicants are required to provide the names, addresses and contact information for all adjacent neighbors and the number of chickens to be harbored.

The city's codes enforcement department has a right to inspect the property if there's suspicion that the ordinance is being violated.

The permitting fee remains $35.
