PEEBLES, Ohio - More details are surfacing about a frightening shooting that put a dentist, who is well known in Peebles and Adams counties, in the hospital Sunday night.

James "Randy" Franklin, 55, is still recovering at University Hospital after allegedly being shot in his car by his wife, Pamela Franklin.

The car that Franklin was allegedly shot in is being kept outside the Adams County Jail. Bullet holes are visible in the front windshield, side window and from the inside of the back of the car. It appears all the shots came from inside the vehicle.

Police say that Franklin and his wife were arguing in the car when she allegedly took out two guns and started shooting at him inside the car, as many as five to 10 times.

A passer-by later saw Franklin injured and called 911.

Caller: "He's standing here in the middle of the road.

Dispatch: "Is he breathing?"

Caller "Yeah, it's Randy Franklin."

Dispatch: "Who shot him?"

Caller: "His wife and she says she's coming back after him...."

As the passer-by tries to help, you can briefly hear Franklin's voice in the background on the 911 call.

Caller: "What are you doing, Randy?"

Dispatch: "What did she shoot him with?"

Caller: "What did she shoot you with?"

Franklin: "A shot gun."

Caller: "A shot gun."

Pamela Franklin was arrested and charged with felonious assault.

On Monday, Franklin's office, which is located on Main Street in Peebles, was still closed.

The shooting remains the talk of the community.

"I was shocked. I was shocked," said letter carrier Karen Ashworth. She's delivered mail in Adams County for 17 years and knows Franklin well.

"They are next door neighbors to my aunt, who keeps my son. And Randy was a best friend to my brother in high school and boy scouts together. It is just a shock that it would happen," Ashworth said.

The Franklins were well known members of the Peebles Church of Christ. Craig Robertson says he knows the Franklins from church and wasn't aware the couple was having any problems.

"We love them both. We don't know what in the world happened but it's a terrible tragedy for this small community, of course. We'll be praying for both of them and hope the best can come out of it. Yeah, it's a stunner," said Robertson.

Pamela Franklin remains in the Adams County Jail in West Union, awaiting her first court hearing, which could come as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.

Officials have not released any additional details about the shooting at this time.
