Cincinnati leaders want strict penalties for towing abuse

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati leaders met outside Kenwood Towing Thursday morning promoting their efforts to make stronger penalties for towing companies that charge more than the state limit for people to retrieve their vehicles.
Ohio law states a company cannot charge more than $90 to tow a vehicle and $12 for each day the vehicle is held.
Brandon Wright complained to city leaders that he had to pay several hundred dollars to Kenwood Towing to get his car back. After filing a lawsuit Wright says he got his money back and then dropped the suit.
Cincinnati Council Member P.G. Sittenfeld introduced a motion to crack down on predatory tow companies on Wednesday.
"There is going to be a more severe penalty now, and we hope that will be a deterrent from taking advantage of anybody," said Sittenfeld.
City leaders now want jail time for companies that abuse the towing laws and hope to push their proposals into law within 30 days.
Officials from Kenwood Towing would not comment.
