HAMILTON, Ohio - A Hamilton man was charged for animal cruelty and abandonment Wednesday regarding an emaciated pit bull in his care.

The Animal Friends Humane Society says Mario Degollado admitted to officials he left the animal near the Butler County Regional Airport where it was later found by a passerby.

The 2-year-old pit bull, whose name is Smokey, was brought to the Animal Friends Humane Society weighing 35 pounds. Smokey is now receiving care from Butler County's Adopt-A-Bull program and his prognosis is good.

Degollado relinquished ownership of the animal and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the Hamilton Municipal Court.
