Rebels headed to first regionals since '03

Seniors forward Weston Blystone and midfielder Haris Skiljo found the net as Boone County beat Cooper, 2-0 in a District 33 semifinal at Cooper on Tuesday.

With the win, the Rebels clinch their first regional berth since 2003.

Blystone scored in the final minutes of the first half when Cooper was unable to clear the ball out of its box.

Skiljo extended Boone County’s lead 10 minutes into the second half when he corralled a loose ball in the Jaguars’ box.

Senior Zach Mimms turned two shots aside to earn his second shot of the season for the Rebels, who will play Ryle at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the district final.

HALFTIME: 1-0. GOALS: BC—Blystone, Skiljo. SHUTOUT: Mimms (2 saves). RECORDS: Boone County 14-3-3, Cooper 8-9-2.

RYLE 5, CONNER 2 – Senior forward Tyrus Sciarra scored four goals for the first time in his career to pace the Raiders in a 33rd District semifinal at Cooper.

Sciarra gave Ryle the lead with 13 minutes left in the first half, and he added three more tallies in a seven-minute span in the second half to make it 4-0.

Junior midfielder Conner Hutcherson netted the Raiders’ final goal with 15:56 left in regulation.

Ryle will play Boone County in the district championship at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

HALFTIME: Ryle, 1-0. GOALS: R—Sciarra 4, Hutcherson. C—Aguirre, Chidress. RECORDS: Ryle 16-4-1, Conner 12-6-1.

VILLA MADONNA 2, DIXIE HEIGHTS 1 – Senior forward Marius VanMelle scored both Blue Lightning goals – one in each half – in a District 34 semifinal at Dixie Heights.

VanMelle put Villa Madonna ahead on a first-half header, and he extended the Blue Lightning's lead to two in the 49th minute.

VanMelle has scored 22 goals on the season as Villa Madonna advanced to the championship game, which will be played against St. Henry at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

HALFTIME: Villa Madonna, 1-0. GOALS: VM—VanMelle 2. DH—Thang. RECORDS: Villa Madonna 10-8-1, Dixie Heights 3-13-4.

SCOTT 2, CALVARY CHRISTIAN 0 – Freshman C.J. Seay recorded his fifth shutout of the season for the Eagles in their Region 37 semifinal at Scott.

Seay’s 11 saves were a career high for him in a shutout.

Sophomore forward Luke Treadway was fouled in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick with 14:29 left in the first half to put Scott ahead.

Senior defender Pauly Paganetto extended the Eagles’ lead with 3:31 left in the opening half off a feed from senior midfielder Eric Olano from 22 yards out that Paganetto left-footed into the net.

Scott will play Brossart at 8 p.m. on Thursday in the district final.

HALFTIME: 2-0. GOALS: S—Treadway, Paganetto. SHUTOUT: Seay (11 saves). RECORDS: Scott 12-10, Calvary Christian 8-8-1.

BROSSART 5, CAMPBELL COUNTY 1 – Senior midfielder Jordan Frommeyer scored the Mustangs’ first two goals in their 37th Region semifinal win at Scott.

Senior midfielder Ben Uebel netted the next two Brossart goals, and junior midfielder Jake Jennings put one in to round out the Mustangs’ scoring.

Brossart will play Scott in the district championship game at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

HALFTIME: Brossart, 1-0. GOALS: B--Frommeyer 2, Uebel 2, Jennings. CC--Kramer. RECORDS: Brossart 21-1, Campbell County 0-16-1.

HOLY CROSS 4, COVINGTON LATIN 0 – Senior midfielder Jordan Wesseling scored a goal in each half in a 35th District semifinal at Eva G. Farris Field.

Junior midfielder Zach Wehrman assisted on three of the Indians’ goals.

Senior Zach Schunder made three saves en route to his second solo shutout of the season.

HALFTIME: 2-0. GOALS: HC—Wesseling 2, Krumpelman, Read. SHUTOUT: Schunder (3 saves). RECORDS: Holy Cross 7-12-1, Covington Latin 5-16.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 10, HOLMES 0 – The Colonels reached double digits in goals for the third time this season after a win in the 35th District semifinals at Eva G. Farris Field.

CovCath will play Holy Cross in the championship at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
