Holy Cross fired a half-court shot that drew iron as Newport held on to beat the Indians, 55-54 in a Region 9 All ‘A’ semifinal at Bellevue on Friday.
Wildcats senior guard Jasean Short was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining, and he made one foul shot to extend the lead to two. Short finished with a team-high 15 points.
Senior forward Marquis Commodore and senior guard Cody Pearson also reached double figures for Newport, recording 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Holy Cross senior center Tony Campbell led all scorers with 23 points.
Newport will face Newport Central Catholic in the final at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds beat St. Henry, 78-61 earlier on Friday.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 72, LEXINGTON LAFAYETTE 70 – Sophomore forward Bo Schuh blocked a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to preserve the Colonels’ win in a Scott County Classic semifinal.
After Schuh’s rejection with CovCath ahead by one, Colonels junior guard Nick Ruthsatz recovered the ball and was fouled. He made one free throw.
Ruthsatz finished with 15 points. Senior guard Nick Fredrick led CovCath with 21 points, including five treys.
The Colonels will face Montgomery County in the championship game at 9 p.m. on Saturday.

CONNER 74, RYLE 48 – Cougars junior forward Samuel Hemmerich racked up a game-best 25 points – eight in the second quarter and nine in the fourth.
