12/14 BBK: Newport holds off Campbell

Holbrook scores 33 in Camels' loss

Despite a game-high 33 points from Campbell County's Corey Holbrook, Newport held on late to edge the Camels, 74-71, on the road.

The Wildcats led throughout, and held a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter before weathering a late charge by the Camels.

Down the stretch, Campbell County cut the lead to two points a couple of times, but the Wildcats kept in front, paced by senior forward JaSean Short's 21 points and 13 from junior Michael Turner.

Arroyal Wright also contributed an eight-point, eight-rebound performance to the win.

Along with Holbrook's 33-point night, the Camels got 15 points from sophomore Deondre Jackson.

LOUISVILLE ST. XAVIER 87, COVINGTON CATHOLIC 78 — CovCath had four players in double figures, but didn't have enough to beat Louisville St. Xavier in a tough, 54-foul matchup, its first loss of the season.

Nick Ruthsatz led the way for the Colonels with 27 points, followed by 15 from Bo Shuh and Sawyer Pauly's 13 points. Pauly also snagged seven rebounds as the teams tied with 36 rebounds apiece.

The Tigers got a game-high 29 points from junior Robert Shaw and 20 points from senior center Brock Kiesler to move to 5-1 on the year. Justin Moody added 17 points and Alex Jones 13 for St. Xavier.

ST. HENRY 66, VILLA MADONNA 39 — Sophomore Connor Kunstek scored a game-high 25 points as St, Henry grabbed its first win of the season.

The Crusaders had four players in double figures to snap their season-opening five-game losing streak, led by Kunstek, and including seniors Michael Best (10) and Mitch Kuebbing, and junior Jordan Noble (12).

St. Henry jumped out to a quick lead, and never trailed.

Villa Madonna was led by Andrew Smith's 15 points, while junior Troy Phelps contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.

MASON COUNTY 64, BEECHWOOD 57 — After losing an early lead, Beechwood tried to rally late but fell short to the Royals at home.

Trailing by 10 heading into the fourth quarter, the Tigers pulled to within five points late in the game but couldn't get closer.

Mason was led by sophomore forward Jake O'Mara, who finished with 21 points.

Alex Stahl (12) and Shawn Johnson also scored in double figures to help the Royals to the win. Beechwood got 16 points fro, Chase Maus, 14 from Brandon Markesbery and 11 from Max Shover in the loss,

SIMON KENTON 73, WALTON-VERONA 44 — The Pioneers had 10 players score, cruising to the home win.

Only senior guard Andrew Sampson (11 points) broke into double digits for the balanced Pioneers. He added six rebounds, two assists and two steals to the winning effort.

The Bearcats had no scorers with more than eight points.

ASHLAND BLAZER 65, BOONE COUNTY 63, OT — Blazer's Zach Hart hit a three-pointer with 3.7 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, then the Tomcats edged the Rebels in overtime to remain unbeaten.

After Boone County missed the front end of a one-and-one with 18 seconds remaining, Hart emerged with the

loose ball then hit the three to tie it.

The Rebels had a chance to win in overtime, but a Brenden Stanley three-pointer with two seconds remaining rimmed out.

The Tomcats were led by Dikembe Dixson's 20 points, all coming in the second half, while Hart finished with 15. Boone was led by 17 points apiece by Stanley and senior Michael Warning. It was a career high for Warning.
