12/15 BBK: Hatton keys Dixie OT win

Junior scores 31 as Colonels extend streak

Dixie Heights posted their fifth-straight win in overtime behind a stellar 31-point night by Brandon Hatton, 64-59 over Franklin County on Friday.

The junior, who scored Dixie’s last six points from the free throw line, is now just 49 points from tying the Colonels’ career scoring record of 1,880 points.

The Flyers forced overtime with a long three-pointer from Rylan Rowe with :05 remaining in regulation, but faded in the extra period.

Rower finished with 20 points on the night, while Lorenzo McCaskell poured in 24 to lead Franklin.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 64, LOUISVILLE CHRISTIAN 34 – NewCath switched defenses at the half, turning a one-point lead into blowout to remain perfect at 6-0.

NewCath turned the tide in the second half after switching from a man-to-man defense. Meanwhile, on offense, the Thoroughbreds pounded the ball inside to their bigs.

Sophomore center Drew McDonald finished with a game-high 18 points to go with six rebounds, while fellow center Jake Schulte pitched in with 10 points.

The Centurions, who had a six-game winning streak snapped, had no scorers with more than five points.

HOLMES 71, BREATHITT COUNTY 37 – The Bulldogs steamrolled Breathitt County at the Kentucky Farm Bureau Classic in Pikeville to move to 9-0 on the season.

Holmes, with four players in double digit scoring, nearly doubled up Breathitt behind 18 points from sophomore guard James Bolden’s game-high 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

The Bulldogs also got 15 from Daquan Palmer and 13 from Chris Englemon, while Quinton Chames chipped in 10.

ASHLAND BLAZER 85, BEECHWOOD 63 – Blazer placed five players in double figures, led by 17 apiece by Tyler Stewart and sophomore center Dikembe Dixson, to roll past Beechwood.

Ashland also got 12 apiece by Ross Thompson and Steve Friley, and 11 points from Zach Hart, as they jumped out to an early lead and kept their foot on the gas.

The Tigers, having lost four after opening the season with a win, were led by senior Chase Maus’ 18 points and 13 from Jacob Huff and 12 from Max Shover.

NEWPORT 80, ST. PATRICK 43 – The Wildcats had 11 players score as they rolled to the win over the Saints.

Senior Arroyal Wright led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while JaSean Short added 13 as Newport built a 20-point halftime lead.

The Saints staged a small rally in the third, but Newport outscored them, 31-8 down the stretch to seal victory. William McKay scored 15 points and Harrison Applegate added 14 to lead the Saints.

ST. HENRY 55, LUDLOW 53 – The Crusaders won their second in a row after opening the season at 0-6, beating Ludlow in the waning moments.

Senior Ben Hils drained a long three with :07 remaining, giving St. Henry the win. It was his only field goal of the game.

Darius Meiman did most of the damage on the night, finishing with 20 points for the Crusaders.

The Panthers were led by Chris Camarena’s 23 points, and an 11-point night by junior center Jerad Howard.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 80, CAMPBELL COUNTY 57 – Junior guard Nick Ruthsatz scored a game-high 30 points as the Colonels bounced back from their first loss of the season.

Ruthsatz went 9-of-15 from the field, 9-of-10 from the free throw line and drained three treys en route to his big night.

CovCath also got 13 points from Nick Fredrick and a 12-point, eight-rebound effort from sophomore Bo Shuh to get back in the win column.

The Camels were led by Corey Holbrook’s 18 points. Jake Franzen and Deondre Jackson also scored 11 points apiece.

ANDERSON COUNTY 70, WALTON-VERONA 52 – The Bearcats saw their early lead slip away as Anderson County’s offense proved too much, losing their third in a row.

Austin Cummins, a sophomore, and junior Luke Mann chipped in 19 points apiece to lead Anderson, overcoming 19 from Walton’s Grant Moeves. The total was a career-high for the Bearcat sophomore.
