Newport Central Catholic shot 49 free throws to Holy Cross’ two as the Thoroughbreds beat the Indians, 51-43 in a first-round Region 9 All ‘A’ game at NewCath on Wednesday.

Thoroughbreds sophomore guard Loren Zimmerman hit five foul shots in the fourth quarter and added a basket to put the game away.

Junior forward Nicole Kiernan finished with a team-best 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, blocked eight shots and stole the ball seven times for NewCath, which will play Lloyd at 6 p.m. on Friday in a regional semifinal.

The Thoroughbreds were 30-for-49 from the foul line and the Indians hit 1-of-2, and the fouls were 27-11 in favor of NewCath, largely due to the Thoroughbreds’ multiple-possession fourth-quarter lead.

Holy Cross, which lost despite racking up twice as many field goals as NewCath, was led by senior guard DeAsia Beal’s game-best 27 points.

The Thoroughbreds will play Lloyd in a regional semifinal at 6 p.m. on Friday. The other semifinal will feature St. Henry and Villa Madonna, who will play at 8 p.m.
