Holmes’ bid for a perfect season finally ended on Friday, but it took two overtimes for Newport Central Catholic to hand the Bulldogs their first loss.

Only five Thoroughbreds scored in their 88-85 win, but all of them ended up in double figures.

Senior guard Michael Bueter went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the second overtime to help NewCath hold off Holmes. Bueter converted a three-point play with a minute left in the first extra session to extend the game.

Thoroughbreds sophomore guard Zach Pangallo tied the score late in regulation with a basket after sophomore guard James Bolden had given the Bulldogs their first lead of the game with a 3-pointer.

Bolden finished with a career-high 37 points, hitting six of Holmes’ 10 treys. Senior guard Daquan Palmer added 15 points, and junior forward Quinton Chames chipped in 12.

Senior forward Nick Seibert finished with 26 points, junior center Jake Schulte 21 and Bueter 18 to pace NewCath. Sophomore center Drew McDonald and Pangallo racked up 12 and 11 points, respectively for the Thoroughbreds.

NewCath has won 13 straight games since suffering its only two losses of the season in consecutive games vs. Louisville Trinity and Covington Catholic on Jan. 4 and 10.

Holmes’ winning streak had reached 25 games. The Bulldogs have just two games remaining in the regular season.
