Junior guard Jaquan Short hit a pair of field goals in the closing minutes as Newport edged Cooper, 48-45 on Saturday.
Senior forward Marquis Commodore hit a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 41-40 lead, which they would not relinquish.
Senior guard Cody Pearson led Newport with 14 points, and Short and Commodore chipped in 10 points each.
Senior guard A.J. Collins netted a team-high 13 points for the Jaguars, whose seven-game winning streak was snapped.

HOLY CROSS 77, CONNER 57 – Senior forward Travis Gabbard poured in 15 points in the second quarter to help the Indians break open a 19-point lead by the half.
Gabbard led all scorers with 27 points, and senior center Antonio Campbell tacked on 21 points, 14 rebounds, eight blocks and eight assists.
The Cougars were led by junior guard Samuel Hemmerich’s 12 points and 11 rebounds.

LLOYD 43, VILLA MADONNA 34 – Senior forward D’Andre Thompson scored 13 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter to help the Juggernauts put the game away.
Senior guard Niko Carter added 10 points as Lloyd equaled its second-best defensive effort of the season.
The Blue Lightning were led by senior guards Andrew Smith’s 12 points.
