Newport trailed by one late in the fourth quarter before rallying to edge Dayton, 69-62 on Wednesday.
The Greendevils led, 59-58, but the Wildcats bounced back to score 10 of the final 14 points of the game. Junior guard Jashawn Short poured in six points in the final frame, and senior guard Robert Engram added five.
Engram and Short finished with 17 points each to lead Newport, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Dayton senior Thomas Rogg led all scorers with 20 points, and senior Danny Sparks added 15 for the Greendevils.
