The surging Lloyd Juggernauts continued their great start to the season by knocking off the Holy Cross Indians in thrilling fashion Friday night, 36-35.

Lloyd (5-1, 1-0) scored the decisive points when quarterback Dexter Smith scampered nine yards with 33 seconds for a score to pull the Juggernauts within one. The senior then connected with sophomore Zach Riddle to convert the two-point attempt to seal the deal.

The game was a back-and-forth battle all night long and would feature plenty of offensive fireworks, but in the end Lloyd would knock off the defending Class 2A state champs.

Smith threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns and added another 87 yards and two scores on the ground in the win Tomi Mejolagbe finished the night five catches for 165 yards, including an 83-yard TD catch and came up with a key interception on defense.

Holy Cross (1-5, 0-1) was led by Jalen Beal, who finished with 227 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries in the loss.

Lloyd welcomes Bishop Brossart next week and Holy Cross heads to Newport as district action continues.
