Newport Central Catholic won and lost an All ‘A’ championship game on Sunday.

The boys’ team beat Bardstown, 75-54, but the girls fell to Owensboro Catholic, 54-42. Both games were played in Frankfort.

Senior guard Michael Bueter and sophomore center Drew McDonald rolled up 21 points for the Thoroughbreds, who won their second small-school championship

NewCath won its other All ‘A’ title in 2000.

The Thoroughbreds led by five at halftime, but they shot 81 percent from both the field and the foul line after the break to blow the game open.

McDonald also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished for four assists. Bueter also recorded four assists and scored 13 fourth-quarter points, including seven free throws to ice it.

Junior center Jake Schulte tallied 12 points and eight rebounds, and senior forward Nick Seibert added 11 points, going 5-for-5 from the foul line.

While the boys were on fire shooting the ball in the second half, the girls struggled in the final two quarters. NewCath shot 25 percent from the field and were 2-for-14 from behind the arc.

Junior forward Nicole Kiernan led the Thoroughbreds with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The girls had also won this title once prior to this season, with NewCath’s lone ‘A’ championship coming in 2010.
