WK 8: Campbell too much for Ryle

Campbell County scored 31 straight points to defeat Ryle and clinch the team’s second straight Class 6A district championship with a 51-20 win Friday at Campbell County.

The Raiders scored on a 4 yard run by Nick Kennedy to begin the scoring, but the Camels answered with a 17-yard field goal by Grant Mahoney followed by four touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Tyler Durham threw for two touchdown during the run, finishing the game by completing 8 of 10 passes for 184 yards.  Durham also ran 24 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior receiver Bobby Moore caught five passes for 100 yards while juniors Jake Zabonick and Avery Wood both caught touchdowns from Durham.  Wood added a touchdown pass to sophomore running back Eli Mathews.

HIGHLANDS 57, HOLMES 28 – Senior quarterback Donovan McCoy completed 12 of 18 passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns in the first half in a game that featured 930 yards of offense.

Highlands picked up 587 yards of offense while Holmes had 343 yards, with both teams also scoring on a kick return.

Junior running back Jonathan Scruggs had 180 rushing yards on 20 carries for the Bulldogs.

BEECHWOOD 54, DAYTON 20 – Senior Max Nussbaum ran for five touchdowns, including four in the third quarter as the Tigers erased a 14-7, halftime deficit.

Beechwood turned the ball over three times in the first half while Dayton freshman quarterback Dylan Adams threw two touchdowns to junior tight end Austin Brockman to give the Greendevils the halftime advantage.

Nussbaum scored once in the second quarter and ran for touchdowns of 27, 45, 23, and 13 yards in the third quarter, finishing with 20 carries for 259 yards.

Adams completed five of 10 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns, adding a 77-yard strike to sophomore receiver Matt Grimme to finish the scoring.

Brockman caught Adams other four completions for 66 yards.

BELLEVUE 52, LUDLOW 0 – Junior running back Dylan Huff scored three first-quarter touchdowns and junior quarterback Tyler Ackerson followed by accounting for three more before halftime.

Huff ran 10 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns, also returning a punt 60 yards for a score.

Ackerson completed two of three passes, with both completions resulting in touchdowns.  He also ran twice for 64 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers defense recorded seven sacks in holding Ludlow to 44 yards on 44 plays.  Senior defensive lineman Austin Barnes was responsible for three sacks.

NEWCATH 49 NEWPORT 0 – Senior running back Dylan Hayes ran 12 times for 123 yards and three touchdowns to help NewCath maintain the Firemen’s Bell by winning the battle of city rivals.

For his efforts, Hayes won the most valuable player award for NewCath while junior running back Dominic Joseph had eight carries for 74 yards to win the same honor for Newport.

Senior quarterback Josh Cain added 114 yards on seven

of 10 passing for the Thoroughbreds, including a 64-yard strike to Dan Ruwe to start the scoring in the game.  Senior running back Mason Myers added touchdown runs on both his carries.

HOLY CROSS 59, BISHOP BROSSART 9 – Junior Jalen Beal ran for four touchdowns and caught another as Holy Cross won by 50 points.

Beal finished with 172 yards of offense, rushing 13 times for 128 yards and catching two passes for 48 yads.

Senior quarterback Burt Pouncy added two second quarter touchdown run, finishing the game with five carries for 90 yards.  Pouncy also picked up 91 yards on two kick returns.

Junior running back Sean Tieman led Brossart with 17 carries for 118 yards and a score.

CONNER 42, GRANT COUNTY 6 – Junior quarterback Drew Barker passed for only 59 yards, but ran 10 times for 81 yards and three scores as Conner won big on the road.

Barker scored three early touchdowns to put the Cougars ahead, 22-0, and added a 3-yard touchdown pass to grow that lead to 36-0 by halftime.

Junior Andrew Way picked up 72 rushing yards on six carries.  

Junior linebacker Zach Castleberry recorded five solo tackles and one assist to lead the defense.  Senior linemen Austin Brake and Braxton Accord followed with four tackles each.

WALTON-VERONA 62, TRIMBLE COUNTY 7 – Junior Chris Latimore rushed three times for three touchdowns and added a 35-yard TD reception as the Bearcats clinched a district title.

Walton-Verona sophomore Baylee Moffett added pair of scores – one on a 23-yard run and another on a blocked punt.

The Bearcats set a team single-game points record.
