Folks have been fighting like cats and dogs forever about which pet is best.

Parade magazine turned to science to see which one really has the upper paw when it comes to smarts and skills.

The animals were judged in several categories, including intelligence (dogs won), independence (cats took top honors here), hunting skills (cats came out on top) and stamina (this one went to the dogs).

So which animal won this epic battle?

Dogs, but only by a whisker.
