Thousands of Cincinnati-area shoppers will be heading to the grocery store this weekend to buy ingredients for their Thanksgiving feast.

You may have already noticed if you've been in the poultry section lately that turkey prices are up this year as a result of the summer drought that sent corn and feed prices skyrocketing.

The good news: All major stores are running sales this weekend, making it the best time of year to buy fresh or frozen turkey. Actually, the best time is the day after Thanksgiving, but most people don't want to buy a bird then.

Local Turkey Prices

Kroger

Kroger has discounts on several different brands of frozen turkey for Plus Card members.

-Their house brand turkey is 99 cents a pound, with the purchase of $10 of other store items. In the past, Riverside has been their house brand, but this year's weekly ad does not specify a brand name.

-Honeysuckle White is $1.19 a pound, with a $10 purchase.

-Butterball is $1.39, with $10 purchase.

Those prices are good, but are still 20 cents a pound higher than last year, according to WCPO's archives.

Meijer

At Meijer, if you spend $20 in the store, you get $10 off a small turkey or $17 off a large bird. That can bring your final price as low as 49 cents a pound.

Remke/Biggs

At Remke/Biggs, spend $50 in the store, and Remke card holders get a Honeysuckle White for just 69 cents a pound.

Target

You might not think of Target for frozen turkeys, but those with a full market/grocery section have some great deals as well:

-Market Pantry (Target's house brand) is 79 cents a pound.

-Butterball frozen turkey is 99 cents a pound

Remember, not all Targets may have this.

Walmart & IGA

Some Walmarts typically have even lower prices than Kroger, Meijer, or Remke, but prices vary from store to store, so you need to check locally.

IGA also varies prices from store to store.

As always, don't waste your money.
