We’ve all heard how you should watch your discretionary spending, but have you ever taken the time to put a number on that spending?
Forbes Magazine has put together a list of 10 things people love to spend money on that most people can probably live without.
When you compute what you’re spending each day, week or month and multiply it by a 40-year career, you’re looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars going down the drain.
Take, for example, a trip to the gas station or coffee shop before work. Your cup of coffee, priced by Forbes at $1.38 and a morning paper at 75 cents may not seem like much, but over the span of a career, you’ll drop more than $25,000 on the two.
Whoa. And that’s not even the worst of it.
Women, these figures are for you. Do you get your hair cut and/or colored? Let’s say you do both every other month and you’re paying a modest $32 for your cut and $75 for your color.
Unlike the coffee and paper, you might argue you can’t go without getting your hair cut, and depending on who you talk to, maybe you can’t live without the color either, but if you’re spending that much on each, you’re dropping another $25,000 over the course of a career.
What else do you splurge on?
Love music? Two albums a month at $9.99 each are going to cost you $9,590.
Go out to lunch? That’ll cost you, if you’re only spending $7 a day, a whopping $72,800 over the span of your career.
Here’s Forbes’ list of 10 things that totaled up, would cost you $266,381.
1. Hair cut: $32 every other month means $192 a year and $7,680 over a career
2. Music: 2 albums a month at $9.99 each turns into $239.76 a year and $9,590 over a career
3. Daily paper: 75 cents a day turns into $273 a year and $10,920 over a career
4. Coffee: Just $1.38 a day on weekdays will cost you $358 a year and $14,351 over a career
5. Hair color: $75 every other month means $450 a year and $18,000 over a career
6. Manicure: $10 a week turns into $520 a year and $20,800 over a career
7. Starbucks Latte: Just $3.10 a day on weekdays will cost you $806 a year and $32,400 over a career.
8. Gym membership: $80 a month means $960 a year and $38,400 over a career
9. Happy hour: Just $20 of drinks a week will tally up to $1,040 a year and $41,600 over a career
10. Lunch: $7 a day on weekdays turns into $1,820 a year and $72,800 over a career
Chances are you’re not splurging on all of them, but you might have some that aren’t on the list.
If so, run the numbers by figuring out how much you spend in a year on your unnecessary treasures and multiply it by 40. Tell us how much you’re spending in your career in a comment below!
