For the first time in its history, the Cincinnati Police Department has designated an officer to serve as a liaison with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Following the lead of police departments in other large cities, Chief James Craig has appointed Officer Angela Vance to fill the role. Vance is a 21-year CPD veteran and is a lesbian, who also serves as the only female member of the department's SWAT team.
Equality Cincinnati, a local gay rights group, has said there have been instances in the past where an LGBT person has been uncomfortable or felt discriminated against while dealing with police. The liaison officer will help make sure everyone is treated with dignity and respect during the interactions.
