Ohio high school students compete for state robotics crown

SHARONVILLE, Ohio - Dozens of high school competitors are in the Tri-State for a championship robotics tournament.

The iSPACE State Championship FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Tournament will be held at Scarlet Oaks Career Campus in Sharonville on Saturday.

According to the iSPACE website, "Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.”

Hardware and software inspections were held Friday.

“I just like coming to the competitions and doing some hands on work and learning new techniques. I would have never thought of this pulley system until I got into this engineering program and on this team,” competitor Andrew Dingle told 9 On Your Side.

The teams competing in Saturday’s event competed in one of three qualifying tournaments to earn a berth at the state competition.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:35 a.m. and robot qualification rounds will begin shortly after 11:00 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public.
