CINCINNATI - You know you’ve seen him. You know you’ve probably asked yourself if what you just saw was real.
Known for his eye-catching and amusing hats, the man known as Cincinnati’s “Hat Man” died earlier this week. A memorial gathering for Avtar Gill was held at 12:15 p.m., Saturday at Findlay Market.
Gill, 71, regularly perused downtown Cincinnati sporting nothing more than a ball cap with a long sheet of construction paper taped to the top. Drawn on the hats were imaginative comments or sayings relating to the news of the day, whether it was sports, popular culture or even just something about a local event.
And even though people didn’t know what to expect on the hats, he brought smiles to their faces.
Often patrolling the Fountain Square area, people always wanted to get their picture taken with Cincinnati’s most famous, “ordinary” resident. Those pictures are now surfacing on a Facebook page dedicated to remembering Gill – Avtar Gill aka "The Hat Man of Cincinnati.”
