WEST CHESTER, Ohio - Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in teens nationwide. In Ohio, 327 teens died between the time period of 2009-11. In more than half of the fatalities, 184, a teen was driving, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Nationally, upwards of 5,000 young drivers are killed annually. That is larger than the number of people killed during the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

These numbers are why Ford Driving Skills for Life Summer Tour held its summer tour in Ohio, beginning in the Cincinnati metropolitan area on Monday, July 9. The group sites that the summer months are the most dangerous for teens, because of increased impaired, distracted and reckless driving.

The tour is to try and train as many as 1,200 teen drivers in the three major metros: Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland.

The first stop on the tour was in West Chester, Ohio (about 40 minutes south of Dayton and 20 minutes north of Cincinnati).  Two sessions were held, one in the morning and another in the afternoon on Monday.

Participating students will learn three core principles during the hands-on training:
-Hazard Recognition/Distractions
Learn concepts of weight transfer through pedal usage and directional change through steering.
Recognize the limitations distracting activities has on driving abilities, and learn how to minimize these factors.

-Vehicle Handling/Skid Control
Practice and learn proper techniques for the recover of over-steer

-Speed & Space Management:
Find out just how quickly things happen and that the distance required to stop is much more than what is  perceived.

The next set of lessons are on Tuesday, July 10 at 4969 Muhlhauser Road, West Chester, Ohio.
