CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - First year students attending Thomas More College began serving the community Tuesday morning. The project is called "90 Days of Service." The idea is to serve the community on local and global levels.
College president Sr. Margaret Stallmeyer announced the initiative during the opening convocation on Aug. 21.
"[It] invites participants to simply 'do' for others in the name of Thomas More College, which strives to challenge students to examine the ultimate meaning of life, their place in the world and their responsibility to others," said Stallmeyer. "Participants are asked to record their service at thomasmore.edu/90days , which will feature weekly updates, downloaded photos and a calculation of the service hours performed by participants."
The project began with this year's freshman orientation to launch the 270 students into service and give them the opportunity to meet and learn about each other. They assembled donated school supplies for two local schools, made pillows and blankets for a local homeless shelter, created picture frames for residents at a local assisted living facility, and wrote letters to troops.
Drew Otten, a La Salle High School graduate, chose to write from his heart to let troops know they have his support.
"Dear soldier, I just wanted to take this time, [to show] how much I appreciate your work," wrote Otten. "Many of the things that I am able to do, right now, would not be possible with your efforts."
After Otten finished writing and reading the letter, she said, "Our world is a better place, because of them."
