COVINGTON, Ky. - The driver in a fatal Northern Kentucky accident was sentenced to jail time and diversion when he appeared in court Monday morning.

Michael Beers, a 20-year-old from Independence, ran a red light and hit three other vehicles at the intersection of KY 17 and Rt. 3035 on Aug. 5. The crash killed Brian and Melissa Hehman as well as their dog.

Beers was sentenced to five years of diversion and a jail sentence of less than a year. He will serve more than eight months in jail and be released Aug. 5 -- the day of the fatal crash.

Beers pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless homicide earlier this year.
