N. Ky. tenants threatened with arrest after surprise eviction

INDEPENDENCE, Ky. - Tenants of a Northern Kentucky apartment complex who were surprised with a 12-day eviction notice were monitored by police officers as they moved out their apartments Sunday.

Residents at the Heritage Park Apartments in Independence, Ky., were told they had to be out by 5 p.m. Sept. 30. Notices were first placed on tenants' doorsteps Sept. 18, notifying them of the Sunday deadline.

The building is being shut down by the fire marshal after the manager says there were problems with plumbing, rotting decks and bed bugs.

Vickie Kindle has been living in the same apartment where she raised her daughter for 26 years. She says despite being kicked out, she isn’t as bad off as some of her neighbors.  

"There are a lot of these families that were waiting for the first of the month for their checks. That didn't affect me. Luckily I had money to go rent an apartment and take care of business. They don't have any place to go," said Kindle.

The tenants say they were told if they weren’t out of their apartments by 5 p.m. Sunday evening they would be arrested for criminal trespassing.

Lakeside Christian Church, St. Barbara and St. Vincent DePaul have been helping the displaced residents with financial assistance and finding a place to live.
