Superintendent of Covington Independent Public Schools announces retirement

COVINGTON, Ky. - The superintendent of Covington Independent Schools, Lynda Jackson, announced her plans to retire next summer at a board meeting Thursday night.

Jackson said she wanted to spend more time with her six grandchildren and also be supportive of her husband's career which could relocate her family.

“Please be assured that this decision comes after much reflection,’’ said Ms. Jackson Thursday night. “I have served this district for 12 years in a number of positions, including the last five as superintendent. Throughout this time, it has been my honor to serve the members of the community and, most importantly the children attending our schools."

Some of Jackson's accomplishments as superintendent include:

•  Implemented the SpringBoard pre-AP curriculum in grades 6-12 and Math in Focus.
• Developed a five-year strategic plan.
• Conducted a self guided study of Holmes High School that resulted in the turnaround model “Holmes 180” which focuses on early college, career clusters and a dual college credit program with Gateway Technical and Community College.
• Established “Focus Visits” at every school to monitor curriculum, instruction, assessment and classroom management.
• Developed a comprehensive plan to close the achievement gap.
• Implemented Data Dashboards in all schools that focus on individual student needs
•  Established Community Learning Centers.
• Adopted the Ron Clark Style Classrooms.
• Increased attendance and enrollment.
• Implemented a plan to address budget shortfall.

“She is the most dedicated, hard-working educator I have ever known,’’ said board chair Glenda Huff. “She will be greatly missed.’’

Her retirement will be effective June 2013.
