CINCINNATI - A teenage son of former Cincinnati Bengals running back Ickey Woods has died at an area hospital after suffering an asthma attack.

Princeton High School Athletic Director Scott Kaufman says Elbert Jovante Woods passed away at approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

He collapsed at home Wednesday evening.

Woods, a junior on the school's varsity football team, left the school after practice at 10:30 a.m.

The Woods family says Jovante began to feel tightness in his chest before he collapsed at home around 6 p.m.

According to the family, Jovante went for about 30 minutes without oxygen. They say the swelling was not a result of hitting his head on the driveway as previously reported.

He was rushed to the hospital and placed in ICU. Over the past three days there were no signs of improvement.

“Earlier today, test results again showed no improvement and no brain activity and he was not responsive to touch. A final set of tests were done at 8 p.m. this evening, at approximately 8:30, Javonte’s battle ended,” said Princeton athletic director Scott Kaufman.

His head coach, Bill Leach, said Jovante was impressive in the classroom. They believe Woods was a NCAA Division 1 prospect due to his high GPA and test scores.

“I told the kids if there’s anyone to aspire to, aspire to what Jovante did he came to every work out, worked all the way through, always with a smile on his face, never complained," said Leach.

Counselors, coaches and administrators will be at the high school on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for kids and staff members as well as next week.
